The studying has gone on to find out whether Saul had any descendants.
We know that King Saul's three sons (Jonathan being one of the three) died with him in battle. However it turns out that before Jonathan was killed he had a son by the name of Mephibosheth.
Well, Mephibosheth found favor in the sight of King David later on and lived on peacefully under David. However, Mephibosheth was crippled so I am unsure as to whether he had children or not.
2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
2Sa 21:7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD's oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
